PROTUS MARIMBA QUARTET

(ES)

The marimba quartet has a very short and recent history, since the instrument itself is relatively new in the field of classical music. However, the beautiful sound of the marimba, often identified with Central American folk music, has a melodic and harmonic quality that gives it countless musical and expressive possibilities, and makes this formation comparable in resources and capabilities to other much more veteran chamber groups, such as the piano four hands, the wind quintet or the string quartet.

As the original contemporary repertoire of this group is still limited, they resort to transcriptions of great works from the past, written by the group, to try to show the audience the possibilities of the marimba played by four musicians. Thus, on this occasion, individual movements of great works written for string quartet or orchestra have been chosen, starting with the Baroque (Vivaldi), passing through Classicism (Haydn), Romanticism (Schubert) and Impressionism (Debussy), and reaching the 20th century with the help of two post-romantic composers (Beach and Shostakovich), to culminate with a current and original work, Condon's Fractalia, which can be classified as Neo-minimalism with New Age influences.

In short, we'll be able to admire the great masters of music history while learning a new way of listening to and interpreting them.
