Fifteen years after making their debut in Portuguese music, Virgem Suta continues to transform everyday life into songs where light pop pop meets good-humoured sarcasm. The duo from Beja, formed by Nuno Figueiredo and Jorge Benvinda in 2009, has earned its place on the national scene with a repertoire that combines catchy melodies with witty lyrics - as evidenced by ‘Linhas Cruzadas’, a song created with Manuela Azevedo that became a radio hit. Nominated for the Golden Globes in 2010 and 2013, Virgem Suta have already taken their accent and sound across borders, travelling to countries such as Brazil, Canada, Macau, Hungary and Chile, where they performed at the Womad festival.
In 2024, after eight years of silence, they returned with ‘No Céu da Boca do Lobo’, released on 25 October. Produced by JP Coimbra and with the collaboration of Jorge Costa, the new work was recorded between Beja, Évora, Lisbon and Porto and marks not only a comeback, but also an aesthetic and lyrical renewal. Consisting of nine tracks, the disc delves into the dramas and delights of human relationships, not forgetting the Alentejo landscape and identity that has always accompanied them. ‘Amor ao Avesso’ (Love Inside Out) and “Dois Dias” (Two Days) were the first calling cards of this new phase, in which they have already won fair applause at recurrently successful concerts from the north to the south of the country.
