Al-Qasar, described as "the most exciting wedding band in the world" by some, coined their distinct music as "Arabian fuzz" – a fusion of electric energy deeply rooted in tradition but never limited by it. Formed in Paris' Barbès district in 2015 by American-French producer Thomas Attar Bellier, Al-Qasar bring together musicians from France, Armenia, Turkey and the United States, creating a truly international group.
At the core of Al-Qasar are Turkish psychedelic rock singer Sibel Durgut, Franco-Armenian drummer Sacha Viken and French bassist Guillaume Theoden. Their debut album, released by Glitterbeat Records, is an imaginative showcase of their eclectic sound, blending powerful bass, drums and percussion that drive an irresistible groove, complemented by electric saz and guitars creating a wall of overwhelming sound.
With their second album "Who Are We," released in 2022, Al-Qasar attracted notable collaborators including Jello Biafra from The Dead Kennedys, Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth, New York-based Sudanese innovator Alsarah, Algerian oud virtuoso Mehdi Haddab (Speed Caravan) and acclaimed Egyptian singer Hend Elrawy (Orange Blossom). Their respect among peers was further highlighted when Iggy Pop praised them on his BBC6 program.
Al-Qasar's music is a rich tapestry woven from the hypnotic trance roots of North Africa, the intricate beauty of Arabic scales and the visceral excitement of rock'n'roll. Their sound is simultaneously ancient and contemporary, local and global – a truly unique formula.
