João Frade, hailing from the Algarve, is a widely recognized accordionist both in Portugal and on the international stage. His musical journey has allowed him to collaborate with prominent artists such as Maria João, Mário Laginha, Mariza, Pedro Jóia, Lura, Jorge Pardo and Munir Hossn. Today, Frade is a constant presence alongside Mariza, the latest chapter in a career distinguished with multiple awards, including the title of world accordion champion.
Deeply respectful of the rich musical heritage of Algarve, Frade has dedicated himself to exploring the region's varied accordion traditions, such as Corridinho, Bailes de Roda, and Zagorrinha. With talented Cuban musicians Michael Olivera and Yarel Hernandez, Frade formed a jazz trio, innovatively blending these traditions.
The synergy and energy of the trio, driven by the Cuban rhythm section based in Madrid, are unmistakable. Olivera and Hernandez maintain a continuous musical dialogue, supporting soloist Frade while ensuring the fluidity and contagious rhythm of the performance. For the MED presentation, João Frade's trio transforms with the special addition of Miron Rafajlović.
Born in Sarajevo, Rafajlović developed a deep love for music from an early age. A refugee due to war, he moved to Canada where he discovered jazz and honed his trumpet skills. In 2007, he joined the original cast of Cirque du Soleil's "Kooza," traveling the world for nearly a decade. In 2014, he settled in Spain, swiftly becoming one of Europe's most sought-after trumpeters, leaving his mark on Grammy-winning Latin recordings and various soundtracks.
